How Lit is Your Room?

Q: How do you know if your room is lit well or not?

A: Well, to determine if your room is well-lit, make sure that all areas have sufficient light to easily locate objects.

Good lighting should be evenly spread throughout the room, providing brightness to see clearly without being too harsh. It should illuminate both horizontal and vertical surfaces, creating a welcoming ambiance.

The amount of light needed in a room varies based on its function. Bedrooms and living rooms require less lumens than kitchens and bathrooms.

Bedrooms and living rooms typically require 10–20 lumens per square foot, while bathrooms and kitchens need a stronger level of lighting, around 70–80 lumens per square foot. Here are some other recommended lumens per square foot for different rooms:

  • Workspace or garage: 8,000–10,000 lumens

  • Kitchen work areas: 7,000–8,000 lumens

  • Home office: 6,000–8,000 lumens

  • Dining room: 3,000–4,000 lumens

You can calculate the necessary lumens by multiplying the room's square footage by the recommended figure. For instance, a 250 sqft bedroom will need approximately 5,000 lumens as the primary light source.

Consider installing a dimmer switch to manually adjust the light level. For activities like reading, you may prefer a brighter light compared to watching TV in the living room.
